Where should we have our outdoor session?
My suggestion would be to ask yourself a few helpful questions. Do you like fall foliage and warm colors, spring flowers and bright colors, or a beach and ocean scene? Do you like wearing fall clothing, sweaters, layers, etc. or prefer sundresses, shorts, and sandals? Do your kids like to explore the outdoors and new places or will it be more comfortable for them to be at home? Pennsylvania has beautiful State Parks which are a great option with nice variety and are free to the public. Some local favorites include Tyler State Park, Peace Valley Park, and Ralph Stover State Park, to name a few. Bucks County also has a number of covered bridges which can add a unique element to your photos. If you enjoy architecture and buildings some ideas may be Fonthill Castle and Mercer Museum, Bryn Athyn Cathedral, small towns like Doylestown or New Hope, or even the big city. Private owned properties and campuses may require a permit and/or rental fee, which would be added to your invoice. I will make the arrangements for your session in advance should you choose a private location. I am sure there are many nooks of Bucks County that I have yet to stumble upon, so I will go anywhere! I love exploring new places too, and I feel we can create a memorable family gallery at any location. Lastly, I am happy to come to your home where we can also create a collection of memories for your family.
What time of day would be best and how long will it take?
For outdoor family sessions I typically schedule a one hour appointment in the early morning or late afternoon hours, depending on the time of year and sunrise/sunset times. The best light for photos are those few morning or afternoon hours of golden light whereas mid day sun can result in harsh sun rays and uneven light for portraits. These are preferred times, but mid day appointments are available based on the location. During my busiest months in the Fall I will schedule back to back appointments during those hours so it is important for us to stay on schedule. Sessions generally take 45 minutes to an hour depending on number of people, location, and other factors.
For mini sessions we would schedule a 15 minute appointment time and the location is selected by me ahead of time with a seasonal theme in mind. This will be advertised on my Facebook and Instagram pages so keep a lookout as they are booked on a first come first serve basis.
What if the weather is bad?
I watch the forecast leading up to our session. Unless its 100% going to rain or other bad weather conditions, I wait until the 12-24 hours leading up to our appointment to determine if we need to cancel and reschedule. I will offer you some other options for a new date and time. I would not keep a deposit due to poor weather.
Should I bring anything?
I typically do not bring props with me for family sessions as I really enjoy using the environment, park atmosphere, and other natural features to add variety to your images. It is not necessary for you to bring anything, but here are a few ideas. Some items that you may consider bringing along may be a blanket for sitting poses or a small chair, stool, or wagon if you have small children who you’d like individual photos of. Also, if you are celebrating a birthday I am happy to incorporate things like a balloon, cupcake/cake, or other unique items. Finally, if there are children involved bring along favorite toys or things you know that will make them smile. Treats and bribes are always a hit to for the end of the session :)
What should we wear?
The best advice I can give is to choose a color palette (3 colors) first and go from there; neutrals, pastels, earth tones, primary colors, are a few examples. Pinterest is a great resource for ideas! The idea is too coordinate colors and patterns, not necessarily match each other. This allows family members to incorporate their personal style and comfort. Layering is a great way to bring in colors using scarves and sweaters, or accessories like earrings, shoes, or belts. If you have outfits you love for your kids, start there and coordinate yourself with colors from those outfits. I want to highlight YOU and the connection in your family so it is best to stay away from distracting shirt logos, words, or large bold prints. When in doubt, neutral is best in the way of whites, tans, grays, then add in a pop of color if you wish.
It can also be helpful to coordinate with your location. I find that fall colors are on the warmer side and spring or summer colors tend to be either bold and bright or pastels. Or will we be in your home? How is is decorated (neutral and casual, formal and bright)? Or the beach? A park? It can be overwhelming, but do not stress! Keep it simple and casual, and most important, comfortable. Another tip if your buying for the whole family is to try shopping at the same store or brand for everyone, it will be easier to coordinate. Happy coordinating!
Here is your basic color wheel. Notice how opposites attract here...yellow and purple, blue and orange, and so on. You can use this as a guide when selecting compatible colors. Neutral is always nice too, including tans, grays, and whites.
